Is Australia violence-prone?
Dr Richard Hil
Australia likes to think of itself as a peace-loving nation – at least that’s what we’re told by our supposed leaders. But are we? What are the grounds for this very big assumption? Our involvement in empire wars, ongoing support for US actions, the mistreatment of refugees and many, many others suggests that we might be more violence-prone than we think. Have a look at the article below. It’s discomforting, but is there some truth to it? What do think? There are many peace-loving folks down under, but what is done in our name? Maybe we need a different way of thinking about ‘defence’? Could Australia’s future be more about diminishing rather than growing our so-called ‘defence capability’. Why not spend more on health and education rather than defence? Why subsidies the weapons industry so that they can export more instruments of death overseas? What are your thoughts?
